My dear Mr. Braddock,
Itâs so odd that I find myself writing to you of all people tonight, but thereâs no one else I can turn to for advice, and you have proven to me, through your reputation and our correspondence, that you have wonderful instincts in matters of the heart.
Of course, you donât even know weâve corresponded, and so first I must introduce myself. I am the woman who wrote the letter from Boston governess Sarah Gibson. You matched her with a sea captain named Daniel McCullum, but in my heart I have no doubt that you intended him for me. You must have seen so much in my letter, and you must have guessed that the captain and I could please one another, and you were so right. I have just spent the most blissful night in his arms, and I have you to thank for it.
Unfortunately, the captain has no need of a wife. His mother-in-law was well-meaning but mistaken in that belief. In many ways, that makes my dilemma simpler, my dilemma being whether I should break off my engagement with my fiancé, whom I left behind in Boston in order to travel to the Caribbean and meet the captain, to see if he was well-suited to Sarah. He was not, as Iâve indicated above.
My question is a simple one. Is it possible that I really do love Jack even though I donât miss him one whit and Iâve given myself to another man despite our engagement? I suppose youâd say I just answered my own question, but there was a time I thought I loved Jack madly. And Captain McCullum is so dashing and charismatic and tender and commanding that I imagine any girl might momentarily stray were he to pay attention to her. And it didnât help matters that Jack has been neglecting me lately. I was a rather easy conquest, especially given my unladylike craving for an adventure or two before I settle down.
Does it sound as though I regret the liaison with the captain? Nothing could be further from the truth.
